V.C. Sweatman's Malt House - New Market Street - and Callowhill Street - 1894 - 1922

(enlargement, 1922 photo of Camden Philadelphia Bridge Foundations, N. Delaware Ave., Phila. side.)

(1924 image, Bridge left, Malt House top left, Pier 19 on Delaware Ave. right foreground)

The image above is a curious architectural feature.

At first, from a distance, I thought it was the steeples on an Orthodox church.

Then, upon closer inspection, I speculated chimneys, incinerator, hot metal forge exhaust etc.

Going from a historic map to the street location of probably New Market and Callowhill, the rest of the images and documentation unfolded.

Malt Kiln House labeled A,A,A in shaded boxes above was a place to dry hops preceding the brewing process.

Malt Kiln also known as an Oast House in tradtional brewing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oast_house
