Meet George and Martha - Inquirer 5 July 1934

The Northeast district or the city, as usual gathered at two places for the chief Celebrations of Independence Day.  That Lawrence St., between Venango st. and Erie ave., should be roped off for the day is almost a tradition.

Under the direction of Mrs. Margaret Hicks and Alfred Kohl the Lawrence st. community celebration began at 8:30 A. M. with a parade, many of the youthful marchers being in costumes suitable to the to the traditions of the day. This was followed by a Salute to the Flag and a prayer offered by Rev. Fred Matthews, Pastor of the Anne Carmichael Presbyterian Church, 5th st. and Erie ave.

Throughout the day there were |races, beginning with events for the smallest children and ending with eccentric contests for adults. In the evening ice cream was served. Several vaudeville acts and a Punch and Judy show added variety to the program.  After 8 P. M. there was dancing.
