FRIEND OF CHILDREN

Policeman Director of Youthful Athletes

in Congested District Succumbs in Hospital

After suffering from a complication of disease since last December, Dennis F. Butler, friend of the children, former professional athlete, member of the Third and Delancy streets patrol crew, and a well-known character of the Fifth ward, died at Pennsylvania Hospital last night. 

"Denny" Butler, as he was known, was born in Schuylkill county fifth-nine years ago and came to this city as a youth. He began his career as a professional swimmer and became one of the best known athletes in the country. He was a boxing instructor for a time and also manager of the Kentucky Rosebud, the Black Pearl and other fighters. As manager of the Coffee Cooler he toured Europe. Returning to America he became a professional walker and participated in numerous six-day contests. 

In 1894 he was appointed as a patrol man at the Third and Delancy streets station and later was detailed as a special officer. Butler took a great interest in the children of this ward and for the past eight years gave them an annual excursion to Washington Park. He also had his own Fourth of July celebration for their entertainment. Last summer he organized the Dennis F. Butler Troop of Boy Scouts and escorted the corps on a hike to New York. Butler resided at 229 Lombard street. He is survived by his widow, a brother and two sisters.
